Excipients
Commercial drug products are manufactured in various forms, including tablets, capsules, syrups, intravenous fluids, topical creams, gels, inhalers, implants, transdermal patches, and suppositories. In each formulation, the active ingredient represents only a small fraction of the final product and is carefully combined with other supporting components during processing.
These supporting components, known as excipients, are inactive substances that play a critical role in drug formulation. Although they do not produce therapeutic effects themselves, excipients often make up the majority of a product’s composition—sometimes up to 90%.
Excipients enhance stability, improve absorption, support controlled release, and ensure proper delivery of the active ingredient within human, animal, or plant systems. Both branded and generic formulations use excipients that are generally recognized as safe (GRAS), ensuring quality, safety, and performance in every application.
